Application for degree project
This page contains information about when and how to apply for writing a Master's thesis at MSE.
When and how to apply
The degree project is carried out during the spring semester according to the programme syllabus. Admission and registration for degree projects are not tied to the usual course registration period for Study period 3. There are no fixed application dates. If you wish to write your degree project during the spring semester, you should submit your application from around the end of November or December of the preceding year and no later than March of the spring semester.
Check your eligibility
To be admitted to the degree project, you must fulfil all the special prerequisites for the degree project course you will take. Please refer to the course pages for MH201X or MH202X for the detailed eligibility requirements.
Find a degree project
For more information, see the "Find a Degree Project" section on the page Degree projects at MSE .
Find a KTH supervisor and examiner
Every degree project requires a KTH examiner and a KTH supervisor. For some degree projects, the examiner, supervisor, or both are already assigned, especially for projects connected to research at MSE. In these cases, you do not need to find them yourself.
For other projects, you are expected to find and contact a suitable examiner and supervisor. The examiner and supervisor can be the same person. When approaching a potential supervisor or examiner, it is helpful to have a short project description available.
The examiner must be one of the examiners appointed for the course. Please see the course pages for MH201X and MH202X for the current list of examiners.
The KTH supervisor is normally a researcher or teacher at MSE. In many cases, the supervisor is also the examiner. A supervisor from another KTH department may also be possible, depending on the project.
When choosing a supervisor and examiner, look for someone whose research or expertise is relevant to your degree project.
Clarify any issues regarding confidentiality and publication
Any questions or issues regarding confidentiality and publication of the thesis in DiVA must be clarified at the planning stage of the degree project. This is particularly important when the degree project is carried out in collaboration with, or on behalf of, a company or other external organisation. Degree project students, examiner, and KTH and company supervisors are encouraged to consult the document Confidentiality and registration in DiVA [SVE/ENG] (pdf 104 kB) , which provides further information and practical guidance on these matters.
