Rebuilding Madonna

Björn Glaser has become the host of the new Comsol User Group at KTH. This new user group will help all of the users at KTH get the most from the software for our research or lab exercises. We will be able to post questions and share our models in the forum and Comsol will work through the User Group to improve the service with specialized workshops, webinars, newsletters… If someone from KTH wants to join the Comsol User group at KTH Social, don’t hesitate to contact Björn via email (bjoerng@kth.se).

Today it was Mania's time to defend her thesis "Fundamental studies related to gaseous reduction of iron oxide". Her opponent was Dr. Ioannis Arvanitidis from the cemented carbide R&D department at Mining and Construction Tools AB (Sandvik). The committee was formed by Prof. Lena Sundqvist from Swerea MEFOS in Luleå (Sweden), Doc. Joakim Odqvist from KTH Materialvetenskap (Sweden) and Associate Professor Muxing Guo from the Thermodynamics in Mateerials Engineering department at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium).

The day arrived for Zhiyin and it was time for him to defend his thesis “Study on the interaction between refractory and liquid steel regarding steel cleanliness”.  His opponent was Prof. Bart Blanpain from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. The committee was formed by Prof. Magnus Jarl from the Inst. för naturvetenskap och teknik of Örebro Universitet (Sweden), Dr. Bridget Stewart from the Materials Processing Institute in Middlesbrough (Great Britain) and Prof. Brian Monaghan from the Faculty of Engineering & Information Science of the University of Wallongong (Australia).

Today it was time for Carl Allertz to defend his thesis "Sulfur and Nitrogen in Ladle Slag". The opponent was Prof. Petrus Christiaan Pistorious from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University.

Today it was one of our industrial students, Jenny Brandberg Hurtig, to defend her thesis entitled "Solubility of hydrogen in slags and its impact on ladle refining". The opponent was Prof. Seppo Louhenkilpi in Metallurgy from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Aalto University.

In our group we really do like to collaborate with other researchers and have people visiting our lab. Last year we had several people visiting and this year is no different. This fall Professor Du's former student, Associate Professor Li Fan, and his student, Wang Yizhi, are visiting for a short while doing some experiments using our facilities. Li Fan is an associate professor at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the College of Environmental and Energy Engineering, Beijing University of Technology.

This fall we have a lot of visitors. Associate Professor Oifeng Shu from the Department of Physcial Chemistry of Metallurgy,  University of Science and Technology in Beijng is visiting us for a short while for some collaboration work.

We have another guest in our group this fall. Dr. mot. Emilie Dahlem is working for FGF FORSCHUNGS-Gemenschaft Feuerfest e.V. and she will stay with us for a short period of time for practicing simulation using COMSOL software.

We have a guest in our group this fall. Dr. Yanyan Bi just received her PhD Degree from KTH this summer. Soon she will go back to China and start working for the Swedish company Sandvik. But before that, she would like to learn more about high temperature experiments and took the opportunity to help out in our lab for a short time.

This time the turn had come to David to defend his thesis. Opponent was Prof. Shin-ya Kitamura from Japan. David succeded in defending his thesis and in return he received his PhD Degree.

Today it was Jesse F. White's turn to defend his thesis. His opponenet was Prof. Kenneth S. Coley from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. Jesse defended well against Prof. Coley's questions about his thesis and in return he received his PhD degree.

Today Björn Glaser defended his thesis work titled: "A study on the thermal state of steelmaking ladles". Opponent was Prof. P. Chris Pistorius from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. Björn did a good job and received his PhD degree.

Today it was Tengfei Deng's turn to defend his thesis and he did a very good job and as a result he will recieve his PhD degree. Opponent was Associate Professor Takeshi Yoshikawa from The University of Tokyo.  Tengfei's thesis is titled Study on the dissolution of lime and dolomite in converter slag.

Today we are all happy to announce that Mattias Ek passed his PhD defense and is receiving his degree.His opponent was Dr Stuart Millman from Tata Steel UK. Mattias thesis' topic was: A Study of some aspects of gas-slag-metal reactions towards dynamic process model and control.

This week we will have two defenses from our group. Mattias Ek will defend his thesis tomorrow Thursday 27th and Tengfei Deng will defend his on Friday the 28th. This will indeed be interesting for everyone and we wish them the best of luck.

This fall we are very honored to have Associate Professor Baijun Yan performing phase diagram studies on the Al2O3-CaO-MgO-SiO2-NbOx slag system. In China Baijun Yan is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physical Chemistry of Metallurgy, which is a part of the University of Science and Technology in Bejing. Baijun Yan is planned to stay with us for 6 months performing his experiments.
