Avoiding cracking during casting of a duplex stainless steel

ACCORD

One of the most serious problems that occurs in the production of duplex stainless steels and that must be addressed are transverse and longitudinal corner cracks in continuous casting. Such cracks require grinding or, in the worst case, scrapping. This leads to the need to replace the conponent and additional costs.

The purpose of this project is to study the technical explanation for these phenomena by examining that casting structure and correlating variations in cracking behavior with variations in microstructure, composition and process parameters such as casting speed and cooling rate.
